Equal, but Better

Here are a few universal truths in our society:
  • You’ll never go wrong saying that women are better than men at pretty much everything
  • You’ll get no backlash by saying that men are dumb, lazy, and useless
  • In any commercial, if a man and a woman are in competition for anything, the woman must win
  • Everyone seems to accept that the world would be a better place if run by women
  • When told how to better communicate, all recommendations will lean toward the feminine style
Like minorities, women got the short end of the stick for most of our country’s--and most of the world’s--history, so I guess it’s only fitting that the pendulum has swung the other way. But now it seems that the only acceptable thing to do is agree that women are equal to men . . . but better in virtually every way.

Even obvious, reasonable, and provable assertions--that men are stronger and faster than women, for example--are now treated as the mad rantings of a misogynist. If you say something like this, you’re often told, in the most grating and demeaning way possible, that [insert name of a world-class female athlete here] could “Kick your ass!” Very true, and completely irrelevant.

But to be fair, I do think that there are lots of things that women, generally, do better than men, generally.
  • I think they’re better listeners, because they pay attention to unexpressed emotional needs.
  • I think they’re better conflict-resolvers.
  • I think they may, as a rule, be better writers, since they’re probably more in touch with their feelings and can probably identify with others better, even in theoretical situations.
  • They’re certainly every bit as smart as men, and studies are now showing that they’re likely as good in all academic subjects, including math and sciences .
There’s probably a lot more to add to that list, but you get the idea.

What I really want us to recognize that men and women both have unique strengths. No one would argue that women do some things better than men. But what about the things that men do better than women? If you can’t think of anything, I think that’s probably really revealing. Don’t you?

1. A recent focus on girls in these areas has helped them surpass boys, raising questions about whether boys have suffered as the attention has shifted.

Ah, the post-feminist pre-masculinist lament. It's nice to see it in print. I think I dislike as much as you do the pro-feminine political correctness that is now required. On the other hand, I listen to sports talk radio and I am here to tell you that "the other reality" is alive and well. And obnixious.

Wouldn't it be just really really cool if we could say what we think is true and be punished for it only if we were wrong? I think I'd like that. I'm guessing, not ever having had a chance to try it.

I like your bulleted lists. They are so specific and make such great targets. Your blog keeps making gestures like that and people will be lining up to take a poke at you.

Pre-masculinist, huh? I'm not sure that'll ever happen, but I like the idea that some day we'll be able to openly say that men are better at something without being called sexist.

I also like the idea that sports radio is less constrained by these rules. I've wondered many times why anyone would want to watch women's basketball, but have never dared to say it aloud.

And yeah, I'm into bulleted lists. I learned pretty early on that writing for the Web is different, so I do a lot of lists. Never do a paragraph when a list will do. Occupational hazard.

Thanks for following me!

I love it that you asserted something strongly and then "took the pledge" at the end and does what everyone else does that you objected to. Why doesn’t your list instead say what men do better? Could you get by with that? Why is there men and women billiards? Why don't women play football? Why are all the great chess players men? Could it be that women are great listeners and they can indeed multi-task better than men and that those two traits cost them in pure performance? What are you suggesting...and then suggest it! Ha. Wow, I'm going to get fired. (send all responses to www.Ihatedoug.com and include $$ to stop mad rantings he illicits)

As much as I appreciate the comment, and your taking the time to read the post, I disagree that I "took the pledge." I thought the way I ended the post clearly showed the ongoing bias. So there!
